Prof. Emmanouil Trantas

Professor Emmanouil Trantas graduated from the School of Agriculture, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1998. He then joined the post-graduate program of the Biology Department of the University of Crete where he worked on molecular breeding of tobacco plants through Post Transcriptional Gene Silencing and Microbial biotechnology to heterologously produce of plant secondary metabolites in yeast. After completing his PhD in 2009, he joined Plant Biochemistry and Biotechnology Laboratory of the Department of Agriculture, Technological Educational Institute of Crete where he worked on engineering the biosynthesis of flavonoids and other plant phenolics in microbes. In parallel, he worked on microbial genomics and diagnostics of economically important plant pathogenic bacteria. In December of 2019, he joined the Department of Agriculture of Hellenic Mediterranean University as a tenure-track Assistant Professor. His overall research effort is focused on the Metabolic Engineering of plants and microbes aiming at their genetic improvement using molecular biology tools.
