Accessibility Centre for individuals with disabilities and individuals with special educational needs

The Accessibility Centre for individuals with disabilities and individuals with special educational needs of the Hellenic Mediterranean University was established in accordance with Article 209 of Law 4957/2022. It constitutes a transformation of the Office for the Support of Persons with Disabilities, previously under Health Care, Social Welfare and Educational Support Services.

The Accessibility Centre for Individuals with disabilities is staffed by specialized personnel with expertise in physical accessibility, digital accessibility, and disability issues.

The Centre’s mission is to ensure the full participation of university community members with disabilities and special educational needs in all educational, research, and administrative activities conducted by the University.

Specifically, the Center’s responsibilities include:

  •  Implementing the Higher Education Institution’s (HEI) Equal Access Plan.
  • Supporting the Equal Access Committee (Article 220) in exercising its duties.
  •  Monitoring national and European legislation and strategy regarding the rights of individuals with disabilities.
  •  Supporting access to the educational process, particularly through appropriately accessible textbooks, educational materials, and interpretation services.
  •  Supporting alternative examination methods for students with disabilities and special educational needs, according to their individual needs and educational capabilities.
  • Providing individual assistive information technologies and facilitating electronic accessibility.
  •  Supporting individuals with disabilities and special educational needs in their participation in research, projects/programs conducted through the Special Account for Research Funds (ELKE), conferences and workshops, institutional body meetings, student assemblies, and artistic and sports activities.
  •  Ensuring electronic communication for resolving administrative issues for individuals with disabilities and special educational needs.
  •  Ensuring and facilitating physical access for persons with disabilities, particularly by providing transportation and escort services.
  • Providing psycho-emotional support and guidance to individuals with disabilities and special educational needs, in collaboration with the Psychological and Counseling Support Center.
  •  Collaborating with Educational Advisors to support students with disabilities and special educational needs.
  •  Maintaining statistical data related to disability and the accessibility of the Institution’s infrastructure and services.
  •  Exercising any other responsibility defined in the Internal Regulations of the Hellenic Mediterranean University that relates to the Unit’s scope.

Operating Hours : the Accessibility Centre operates daily in accordance with the University’s standard administrative hours. Student reception hours on working days are from 09:00 to 15:00. The Centre may alter the student reception hours if deemed necessary in exceptional circumstances, following timely notification.
