Hellenic Mediterranean University: An International Hub for Academic Library Cooperation

As part of its commitment to promoting international cooperation, the Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU) announces the 2nd International Week for Academic Libraries of HMU. The event is organized by the Library and Information Centre, in collaboration with the Department of Public and International Relations of HMU, and will take place from 21 to 25 September 2026, on the first floor of the HMU Library in Heraklion.

Participants from 25 Countries and Greek Universities

The International Week brings together 64 librarians from 25 different countries: Ireland, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Croatia, Bulgaria, Latvia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Türkiye, Algeria, Georgia, Uganda, Moldova, Armenia, Egypt, Ghana, Jordan and Israel.

In addition to the Hellenic Mediterranean University, Greece is represented by participants from:

  • Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
  • University of Patras
  • University of Ioannina
  • Panteion University
  • Historical Museum of Crete
  • Koundourios Municipal Library of Agios Nikolaos

Objectives and Thematic Areas of the Event

The HMU initiative primarily aims to promote international cooperation and knowledge exchange among academic libraries. Through a series of presentations, participants will have the opportunity to learn about current trends and global challenges in the field, while also highlighting the crucial role of academic libraries in supporting research, education and learning.

The programme covers a broad range of highly relevant topics, including:

  • Open Science and Open Access: New practices in scientific research.
  • Information and Digital Literacy in Libraries and Artificial Intelligence: The impact of AI on the digital transformation of libraries and on the education and training of their users.
  • Accessibility Services: Support for students with print disabilities.
  • Library Consortia: Facilitating access to information resources.
  • Empowering Local Communities: Strengthening links with local communities.

The International Week for Academic Libraries of HMU is an important initiative that further strengthens the University’s position within the global landscape of academic cooperation.
