The Theatre Group of Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU) is inviting new members to join its activities for the new academic year and is organizing three open introductory meetings on Monday, 19 October, Wednesday, 21 October, and Monday, 26 October 2026, at 21:00, at the “Markos Karanastasis” Indoor Auditorium on the Heraklion Campus.
Using theatre, play, physical improvisation and experiential exploration as its main creative tools, the Group provides a space for expression, communication and collective creation. Participants have the opportunity to discover different aspects of the theatrical process and, depending on their interests, to contribute both on stage and through dramaturgy, music and backstage support.
The invitation is open to everyone, regardless of previous theatre experience or student status. The first open meetings aim to introduce new members to the Group, its activities and the way it operates.
A long-standing cultural presence at HMU
The Theatre Group has been active within the University community since 1983, while maintaining a consistent cultural presence in the city of Heraklion. Its operation is based on collaboration and the active participation of its members, with discussion and decision-making taking place collectively through meetings held in a circle.
Since 1996, Petros Mavromatidis has made a significant contribution to shaping the character of the Group, while since 2012 a workshop-based model incorporating a theatre-pedagogical approach has been implemented in collaboration with Nikolis Avramakis. Following the resumption of its activities in 2021 after the pandemic period, the Group has continued its creative journey through new activities and performances.
This year’s poster pays tribute to Panos Mamatzakis
The poster for this year’s call for new members features a photograph by Panos Mamatzakis, a photographer, artist and friend of the Theatre Group, who passed away last summer. The photograph was taken during the performance “Krikalev” and was selected by the Group as a symbolic tribute to his memory and creative presence.
