HMU: Coordinator in the Establishment of the Regional Adaptation Mechanism of Crete to Climate ChangeDraft

The Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU) is actively participating, alongside leading scientific and research institutions in Greece, in the creation of the Regional Adaptation Mechanism of Crete to Climate Change. This initiative is part of the Programme Agreement signed on August 1, 2025, at the Region of Crete.

The new Mechanism will serve as a hub for scientific documentation, innovative actions, and educational initiatives, with the aim of strengthening Crete’s resilience to the challenges of climate change and contributing to the island’s sustainable development.

HMU assumes a central coordinating role in the project, leveraging its scientific expertise, cutting-edge research, and strong connection with local society. The project is coordinated by Dr. Emmanouil Karapidakis, Director of the Institute of Energy, Environment and Climate Change (IEECC) of HMU’s University Research and Innovation Center, Professor, and Dean of the School of Engineering.

As part of this collaboration, HMU and its partner institutions will develop and support actions related to:

• monitoring and recording the impacts of climate change in Crete,
• conducting studies and implementing pilot projects to address phenomena such as coastal erosion and flooding,
• protecting vulnerable social groups from the consequences of extreme weather events.

The project activities will be funded by the Green Fund and implemented through the collaboration of the Region of Crete, HMU, the University of Crete, the Technical University of Crete, the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), the National Observatory of Athens, and the Hellenic Agricultural Organization “Dimitra”.
