HMU Organizes an International Interdisciplinary Conference Dedicated to Rena Kyriakou

The Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU) is delighted to announce the organization of the International Interdisciplinary Conference “Rena Kyriakou”, which will take place in Heraklion, Crete, on November 14–16, 2025.
The conference is supported by the Region of Crete, held under the auspices of the Municipality of Heraklion, and co-organized by the Society of Cretan Historical Studies (SCHS / Historical Museum of Crete), the “Lilian Voudouri” Music Library of the Friends of Music Association, the Association of Women’s Organizations of Heraklion Prefecture, and the Cultural and Conference Center of Heraklion (CCCH).

The event is dedicated to Rena Kyriakou, the renowned pianist and composer of international acclaim. Through this initiative, the Hellenic Mediterranean University offers Heraklion—Kyriakou’s birthplace—the opportunity to pay long-overdue tribute to this distinguished figure of art and music, reviving forgotten works and stories while bringing the past and future of culture into creative dialogue.

The conference will include:
• Academic presentations by distinguished scholars, musicologists, historians, performers, and representatives of cultural institutions from Greece and abroad
• Musical events and piano recitals featuring works by Rena Kyriakou
• Presentation and study of her compositional work, much of which remains unpublished to this day
• Exhibition of archival material preserved at the Historical Museum of Crete (SCHS) and the “Lilian Voudouri” Music Library
• Parallel educational activities and events dedicated to women

This initiative aspires to become a reference point for research, performance, and public appreciation of Rena Kyriakou’s legacy, highlighting her multifaceted personality as both performer and creator. At the same time, the conference forms part of HMU’s broader effort to strengthen cultural initiatives and to connect academic knowledge with society and historical memory.
