he 2nd Spring Cultural Festival of the Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU), taking place in Heraklion from 19 April to 2 May 2026 under the symbolic title “Return”, opens with a distinctive concert of contemporary music. The Festival is supported by the Region of Crete and held under the auspices of the Municipality of Heraklion.
The opening concert, titled “Thread of Light – Flows of Wind”, marks the “return” to his hometown of internationally acclaimed Greek composer Minas Borboudakis. The renowned contemporary music ensemble Ergon Ensemble presents, for the first time in Heraklion, works by Minas Borboudakis under the musical direction of the composer himself. Born in Heraklion and currently based in Germany, Borboudakis is considered one of the leading voices of contemporary Greek composition, while Ergon Ensemble is widely recognized for its high-level productions and international presence.
The music of Minas Borboudakis belongs to the field of contemporary classical music and is characterized by strong rhythmic energy, rich timbral textures, and techniques such as microtonality. His work often explores philosophical themes such as time, space, and cosmology. His compositional style combines elements of European contemporary music with references to ancient Greek musical systems and rhythms, creating a distinctive sound world where rhythmic intensity coexists with poetic and reflective moments.
The concert will take place on Sunday, 19 April 2026, at 20:00, at the Concert Hall of the Cultural and Conference Center of Heraklion (PSKH). Admission is free for the public.
