The conference organized on Friday 07 July 2023 by the Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU) and the company Medical Waste SA was crowned with great success. The theme of the conference was: “The on-site treatment of Hospital Waste in the context of the revised European Directive 91/271 on Urban Wastewater” in the framework of the “DIANYA” project of the RESEARCH – CREATE – INNOVATE Action, which is co-financed by the European Union and National resources through the E.P. Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship & Innovation (EPANEK) (project code: T2EDK-02905).
Representatives of institutions, companies, academic and research staff attended the conference. Greetings were addressed by the Rector of the Hellenic Mediterranean University Professor Nikolaos Katsarakis, the Deputy Regional Governor in the Environment Sector Nikolaos Xylouris and the Director of the Technical Service of the Venizelio General Hospital of Heraklion Efstathios Gryparis.
The goal of the conference was to highlight the problems created by the presence of pharmaceutical substances in urban wastewater and the need that has arisen in recent years for the development and implementation of an integrated methodology for the management of these wastewaters. The speeches presented the results of the “DIANYA” project, through which a standard pilot hospital waste treatment system was built and operated at the Venizelio General Hospital of Heraklion.
