InSign, is a three-year international research project funded by the European Union (Erasmus+). The aim of the project is to create an innovative infrastructure to promote communication between deaf and non-deaf people, as well as between deaf students from different countries using International Sign Language (ISL).
The project involves higher education institutions from Europe and more specifically:
University of Siegen, Germany
Hellenic Mediterranean University, Greece
University of Maribor, Slovenia
Instituto politecnico do porto, Portugal
EACG, Cyprus
In addition to the above partners, the project is supported by 27 partner organizations across Europe. The InSign project promotes the internationalisation of education and international mobility among deaf pupils/students. Through the adoption of International Sign Language, students will find a common way of expression and communication. In this way, the obstacles that exist in communicating with deaf students will be removed and the doors of internationalization and globalization will be opened in a demanding and constantly changing environment.
The objectives of the project and its final deliverables are:
An automatic translator from various European languages to International Sign Language through a three-dimensional avatar.
A certified International Sign Language course and a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) aimed at deaf and non-deaf people who want to learn a simple sign language.
A book (with ISBN) that will be published in five European languages and will describe the main aspects of International Sign Language as a globalized lingua franca.
The Insignt scientific coordinator for HMU is the Professor of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) George Papadourakis. Also participating in the project are the EDIP Member of ECE Konstantinos Karampidis and the PhD Candidate of the same Department Mr. Konstantinos Kornarakis.
