The Region of Crete and the Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU) signed a Programme Agreement focusing on accessibility in tourism.
On the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the Programme Agreement was signed for the implementation of the project “Crete for All.”
The implementing body of the project is the Tourism and Entrepreneurship Laboratory of the Department of Business Administration and Tourism at HMU.
The project’s Scientific Coordinator is Associate Professor George Kritsotakis.
The agreement was co-signed by the Governor of the Region of Crete, Mr Stavros Arnaoutakis, and the Rector of HMU, Professor Nikos Katsarakis.
Overall, the project includes a training programme for approximately 500 tourism sector employees.
It will be implemented across all four Regional Units of Crete: Heraklion, Lasithi, Rethymno, and Chania.
Its primary objective is to develop knowledge and skills in accessibility in tourism, promoting equal participation for all.
In addition, the initiative aligns with the National Strategy for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the “Greek Tourism 2030” Strategic Plan.
It contributes to the development of a more inclusive and sustainable tourism model.
The Rector of HMU described the agreement as “emblematic”, highlighting its importance for strengthening accessibility in tourism.
At the same time, both the Governor of Crete and the Deputy Governor for Social Policy and Solidarity, Mr Stelios Vourgias, emphasized the project’s focus on developing specialized skills.
The ultimate goal is the provision of high-quality services and equal access for all.
The meeting was attended by members of the HMU administration and the project team.
Among them were the Vice Rector for Research and Innovation, Professor Athanasios Malamos, and the Dean of the School of Management and Economics, Professor Alexandros Apostolakis.
Officials from the Region of Crete’s Social Welfare and Social Services Departments were also present.
