🏛️The Equal Access Unit of the Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU) is organizing a seminar and workshops to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Applications for participation will be accepted until Tuesday, 09 December 2025.
🌏 Since 1992, the United Nations (UN) has established 3 December as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, with the aim of promoting global understanding of disability-related issues. The designation of this day highlights, on a global scale, the need to uphold the rights, dignity, and well-being of persons with disabilities, placing these matters at the forefront of public discourse for governments, institutions, and citizens alike.
The UN’s initiative underscores the imperative to overcome perceptions that contribute to shaping a “second-class citizen” identity, which remains evident in various aspects of everyday social life. At the same time, it emphasizes the importance of cultivating a culture of acceptance and respect for diversity, as well as institutionalizing the full and equal participation of persons with disabilities in all dimensions of political, cultural, and social life, within every community, large or small.
The theme selected by the United Nations for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities for 3 December 2025 is: “Fostering disability-inclusive societies to promote social progress.”
This theme clearly highlights the need for collective action and collaboration among all social actors and institutions, with the objective of shaping a more just and inclusive society. A society in which persons with disabilities enjoy equal opportunities, unobstructed access, and full participation in all domains of social, cultural, and economic life, free from restrictions and barriers.
The newly established Equal Access Unit of HMU has as its core mission the support of students with certified disabilities, special educational needs, and/or severe medical conditions. On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the Unit seeks to honor its central messages: inclusion, mutual respect, acceptance of diversity, and recognition that every individual may, at different stages of life, require support regardless of their abilities.
Within this framework, the following activities are proposed:
