School of Music and Optoacoustic Technologies

The School of Music and Optoacoustic Technologies (SMOT) of the Hellenic Mediterranean University was established in May 2019 and is based in the city of Rethymno (Government Gazette 70/A/07-05-2019). At present, it operates as a single-department school.

The School comprises the Department of Music Technology and Acoustics, which began operation in September 1999. It stands out as the only academic program in Greece dedicated to sound and music technologies, combined with the science of acoustics.

Since 2018, the Department has offered the Master’s Degree Program in “Sound and Music Technologies”, providing advanced knowledge and research expertise in the fields of digital audio processing, sound synthesis, acoustics and optoacoustics, artificial intelligence, and motion tracking for musical applications.Additionally, the Department offers a Doctoral Program, covering all of the aforementioned fields.

The School is guided by the following core principles:

  • continuous monitoring of scientific and technological developments,
  • systematic improvement of the quality of undergraduate and postgraduate studies, as well as student welfare services,
  • promotion and support of cutting-edge research,
  • and openness, with an emphasis on engagement and contribution to society.

Department of Music Technology and Acoustics

The Department of Music Technology and Acoustics was founded in September 1999 and, to this day, remains the only department on the university map of Greece focusing on sound and music technology, as well as the science of acoustics. Both of these scientific fields have developed immensely; however they suffer from an equally immense shortage of specially trained staff, even at this age when developments in all areas of technology are truly rapid.
