In the context of the completion, but also the following day, of the ELECTRIPORT – Alternative maritime power in the Port of Heraklion project, which concerns the electrification of ships docked at the Port of Heraklion, a working meeting was held on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, between representatives of Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU), the Heraklion Port Authority (OLI) and the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (DEDDIE) at the University’s premises in the area of the Electricity Systems Laboratory. At the meeting, in which critical technical issues were discussed for the interconnection of a new medium voltage substation of the port with the existing network of the city, the Dean of the School of Engineering, Professor Manolis Karapidakis, who moderated the discussion, and the Postdoctoral Engineer, Alexandros Paspatis, attended from HMU, the Managing Director of OLI Minas Papadakis, the Director of DEDDIE Heraklion Pavlos Vardoulakis, the Special Advisor Minas Seimenis and the executive of OLI Engineer Emmanuel Tsimblostephanakis.
The project “Port Electrification – Alternative Maritime Power” – “ELECTRIPORT”, in which the Hellenic Mediterranean University participates as a Partner, was successfully submitted in January 2021 to the European Mechanism “Connecting Europe Facility 2020”. The Project includes the preparation of a full series of maturation studies and the development of an integrated “Cold Ironing” system in the Port of Heraklion, Crete, with a parallel investigation into the use of renewable energy sources. The project organizers aspire to complete the necessary technical, financial and environmental procedures, so that the Port of Heraklion, Crete, will become the first Port in Greece to methodically and comprehensively apply the “Cold Ironing” technology. The specific project is a critical infrastructure for the port of Heraklion, which will place it on the map with the most modern ports worldwide.
