The renovated facilities of “Markos Karanastasis” sports center of the Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU), renovated by the Region of Crete, were inaugurated by the Regional Governor of Crete, Stavros Arnautakis, in the presence of Deputy Regional Governors Nikos Syrigonakis P.E. Heraklion, Giorgos Pitsoulis of Sports, Prevention and Mobile Units, the Regional Councilor Giorgos Matalliotakis, the Rector Prof. Nikos Katsarakis, members of the university community, students, athletes, representatives of sports associations and HMU employees.
Rector Prof. Nikolaos Katsarakis, in his welcoming speech, warmly thanked the Regional Governor for supporting the renovation project of the sports center into a modern center, financing it with the amount of three hundred thousand euros. He mentioned the importance of the project for the University Community of the Hellenic Mediterranean University and the local community and described in detail that the new project includes the installation of a new wooden floor in the basketball hall, the renovation of the changing rooms, the creation of changing rooms as well as accessibility projects for the disabled, etc. a. The Rector did not fail to thank his former and current colleagues, the vice-chancellors and the services of the University for promoting the project.
The Regional Governor of Crete, Stavros Arnautakis, in his own greeting, after respectfully mentioning the memory of Markos Karanastasis, thanked the Rectorate for the cooperation, stressing that the renovated modern sports center is a point of reference for the Hellenic Mediterranean University and Heraklio City. At the same time, he mentioned that this modern sports center can host major events, international competitions and that the Region supports sports, athletes, disabled athletes with modern infrastructure. The Region of Crete, he added, invests in sports in our youth and cooperates with associations in the implementation of events and in claiming resources.
On the occasion of the opening of the renovated sports center, sports events were held by the basketball team of the Sports Association of Kinetics Disabled (ASKA) “Heraklion” and HMU volleyball team.
